The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has launched a self-baggage drop (SBD) facility at the domestic terminal (T4) of Chennai airport, aimed at reducing passenger wait times at luggage check-in counters and expediting departures. Currently, this service is available for travelers flying with Air India Express and Vistara Airlines.
Eight self-service kiosks have been installed in Terminal 4, allowing passengers to check in their baggage independently by entering their PNR numbers. After checking in, travelers will scan their boarding passes, and the kiosks will display any prohibited items that cannot be taken on board for security reasons. Passengers will then review the details and confirm their baggage weight before the machines print tags to be affixed to their luggage. Finally, bags can be placed on a conveyor belt for transport to the aircraft’s cargo hold.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance passenger convenience and streamline the check-in process at airports. The introduction of self-baggage drop facilities is expected to significantly improve the overall travel experience by minimizing queues and allowing passengers to proceed more quickly through the airport.
The SBD facility represents a significant technological advancement at Chennai airport, reflecting AAI’s commitment to modernizing airport services and improving operational efficiency.
