Chennai International Airport has taken a significant step toward bolstering security by installing 2D barcode scanners at its terminal entry gates. This advanced system aims to address previous instances of unauthorized access, where individuals used fake tickets to enter the terminal. One such case involved a man entering the terminal with a fabricated ticket to spend extra time with his wife. Although he was eventually caught by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), similar incidents have prompted the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to implement stricter measures.
As part of the new system, passengers are now required to have their tickets scanned by CISF personnel rather than just visually inspected. The 2D barcode scanner, integrated with the airline database, allows security staff to verify flight details such as departure time and status in real time. This ensures that only passengers with valid tickets gain access to the terminal, significantly reducing the risk of security breaches.
Currently, four out of the 16 entry gates at Chennai Airport are equipped with these scanners. Officials mentioned plans to consider extending the use of scanners to security hold areas in the future. Apart from improving security, this facility is also expected to alleviate congestion at entry points by making the verification process faster and more efficient.
The implementation of 2D barcode scanners is part of a directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Although discussions to adopt this technology at Chennai airport have been ongoing for some time, its installation was finalized only recently. Other major airports in India, including Mumbai Airport, New Delhi Airport, and Thiruvananthapuram Airport, already use similar systems.
Chennai Airport has also introduced additional passenger-friendly initiatives, including the installation of eight new self-baggage drop kiosks at its domestic terminal. These kiosks enable passengers to complete their check-in process independently, contributing to a smoother and more convenient travel experience.
