The FlyAmritsar Initiative (FAI) has brought attention to various issues affecting travelers at the Sri Guru Ram Dass International (SGRDI) Airport in Amritsar, urging the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), to address these concerns promptly. Sameep Singh Gumtala, the global convener of FAI, along with Secretary AVM Yogesh Kamra, emphasized the need for immediate action to enhance passenger safety, comfort, and convenience at the airport.
With the daily passenger footfall exceeding 10,000 and reaching three million for the financial year 2023-24, the current terminal building at SGRDI Airport requires urgent attention and expansion to accommodate the growing number of flights and passengers. Long queues at various checkpoints, including terminal entry, X-ray and check-in counters, immigration and security checks, as well as challenges in the pick/drop area, insufficient availability of wheelchairs and baggage trolleys, are causing significant delays for passengers, as highlighted by Kamra.
FAI has persistently advocated for the opening of multiple departure area gates to alleviate queues and enhance passenger flow into the terminal building. Concerns have also been raised regarding instances of airport staff soliciting tips and cash from passengers, overcharging by parking contractors, dysfunctional FASTag systems, and the absence of air cargo services despite the airport’s connectivity and flight frequency.
The initiative has emphasized the need for developing a multi-storied parking facility, rejuvenating the pick-up and drop-off area, and addressing issues such as slow X-ray, security, and immigration processes, as well as the presence of pests, cleanliness concerns, and the implementation of self-baggage drop and Digi Yatra technologies at the airport. FAI has also urged for the establishment of local and intercity bus services to enhance connectivity with the airport’s catchment area, anticipating a further increase in passenger traffic.
