GMR Group, Asia’s largest private airport operator and the second-largest globally, is making significant strides in transforming India’s aviation sector. The company is committed to sustainable innovation and modernization to meet the increasing demands of one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

Indira Gandhi International Airport: A Leader in Sustainability

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), managed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first airport globally to reach Net Zero Carbon Emission status (Level 5) under the Airport Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program. This achievement is particularly notable as DEL handles over 40 million passengers annually. Initially targeting 2030 for this goal, the airport surpassed expectations through various innovative initiatives, successfully reducing its carbon emissions by 200,000 tonnes each year.

Key highlights of DEL’s sustainability efforts include:

  • 100% Renewable Energy: The airport operates entirely on renewable energy sources, including a 7.84 MW solar plant, which eliminates nearly 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
  • Green Infrastructure: Terminal 3 has received LEED Gold and IGBC Platinum certifications, while Terminal 1 has achieved LEED Platinum Pre-certification.
  • Water Management: With over 350 rainwater harvesting systems and a zero liquid discharge sewage plant, DEL is on track to become water-positive.
  • Operational Efficiency: The airport employs a Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) system to enhance air traffic flow, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Electric Vehicles: The use of electric vehicles and TaxiBots has significantly decreased fuel usage during taxiing operations.

These initiatives underscore DIAL’s commitment to sustainable development, positioning it as a benchmark for green aviation infrastructure worldwide.

Modernization of Nagpur Airport

GMR Airports Limited is also spearheading the modernization of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, Maharashtra. This strategically located airport serves as a vital hub for both passenger and cargo traffic in Central India. In collaboration with MIHAN India Limited, GMR has signed a concession agreement to enhance and expand the airport’s facilities.

The modernization project will increase passenger handling capacity to 4 million annually in its first phase, with plans to scale up to 30 million in the future. Key project highlights include:

  • Enhanced Cargo Capacity: The airport will boost its cargo handling capacity to 20,000 metric tons.
  • State-of-the-Art Infrastructure: The project includes a new terminal, upgraded Air Traffic Control tower, and improved airside facilities.
  • Regional Economic Growth: The upgraded airport is expected to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic development across Central India.

G.B.S. Raju, Business Chairman – Airports at GMR Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for aviation growth.
